Kiel, Germany. The city where they are working hard to create an emission-free future. Together with Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel, we have come up with a concept whereby ferries can sail emission-free in the port of Kiel. At HSE we are proud to have contributed to the electrification of Kiel.

How did the project come about?

What is the goal?

The aim is that the ferries will still be able to operate over 8 years as they do today. These are not only used as ferries that mainly take commuters and students from A to B. At these ferries you can also come on board for a tourist trip between various places in the Kiel Fjord.

The Gaarden is hybrid based. It can use its own energy from the generators and/or the batteries, which ensures that the Gaarden always has a low energy consumption. Caused by the batteries, this vessel can sail around the centre of Kiel emission-free.

Wat heeft Oechies betekend?

The challenge

The challenge was to ensure that all variable factors were included in the battery capacity calculations. Together with the shipyard, we looked at the consumption at mooring , different speeds at which the ship is sailing, the internal systems, etc. to determine how powerful the batteries need to be to achieve this goal.

Almost three years after completion, an interim calculation was carried out to check whether the goal can be achieved. Currently the forecasts are better than expected. It looks like the goal will be achieved with ease. A later intermediate measurement will give more precision.
